Smart Supports for Success

THE ROADBLOCKS FOR CHILDREN'S SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS AT HOME and SCHOOL:

CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS

Challenging Behaviour acts as a barrier to a child's ability to achieve success in the home and school environment. It can cause stress in family relationships, interfere with learning and cause heartache for parents and staff in educational settings.

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Learning Difficulties refer to significant learning problems in an academic area. Some examples of Learning Difficulties are Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Sensory Processing Disorders, Auditory Processing Disorders, Dyscalculia and ADD/ADHD.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

Learning Disabilities often require a clinical diagnosis from a professional such as a psychologist, paediatrician or speech pathologist. Examples of Learning Disabilities are Autism, Down Syndrome, Speech Language Impairment, Physical Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and Intellectual Disability.

  • Is your child struggling academically or socially at school?

  • Do you know how to support your child with his/her organisational skills and learning at home?

Alice specialises in working with children with disabilities and challenging behaviours.

In the home setting Alice will work with you to identify your child's needs through Functional Behaviour Assessments. She will come to you and observe your child at their worst, and support you every step of the way in working with your child to improve behaviour and family relationships. Alice is able to work with your child directly as well as guide and coach you to be able to confidently implement simple, targeted behaviour plans.

For school supports, she will interpret your child's specialist reports and work with teachers to understand your child's needs and implement specialist recommendations.  Alice is able to advocate for you and your child within the educational setting. She has extensive experience in developing practical strategies and plans to improve school learning and behaviours.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Young people with Autism may struggle at home and in schools due to difficulties with their social communication, social interaction and restrictive or repetitive behaviours and interests. Families and staff often struggle with understanding how to support these children and youth, particularly when there are established patterns of problem behaviour and destructive meltdowns.

Alice has extensive experience in working with young people with ASD exhibiting challenging behaviours at home and school, and in advocating for children with ASD in educational settings to ensure necessary adjustments for success are made.

Learning Difficulties

A significant number of students in schools have difficulties learning to read, write or work with numbers. These barriers to learning may lead to failing grades, frustration and low self esteem in children. These children are often at risk of disengaging from schooling with far reaching consequences later in life.

Alice has worked with young people, parents, specialists and educational teams to effectively advocate, understand and make adjustments for young people with various learning difficulties to successfully navigate their schooling.

Individual Behaviour Support

All children and youth who are experiencing difficulties at school due to a learning difficulty/disability are at risk of developing 'problem' behaviours. They are often labelled 'the naughty child' and can fall into a cycle of ongoing difficult behaviours and reinforcement.

Alice specialises in analysing the reasons for problems behaviour, both at home and school, and devising successful plans to change these behaviours. She has a no-nonsense approach which establishes high expectations for young people, whilst still delivering a caring and supportive service.
